Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What is SimForge?

SimForge builds digital twins of real places and the simulator to drive in them: SimForge Worlds (HD maps and digital twins), Helios Engine, Recast for turning real drives into scenarios, and SimForge Gym for RL training. The simforge CLI runs it on your own machine, Studio in the browser is free to explore, and SimForge Cloud runs the same jobs on SimForge's machines.

Introducing Helios
How do I start?

Create an account, install the CLI, sign in with simforge login, install the runtime and pull a map. The quickstart goes from an empty machine to rendered frames.

SimForge Cloud is open in beta. New accounts start with $10 in free credits; credit purchases aren't open during the beta.

Quickstart
What does my machine need?

Linux on x86_64, Ubuntu 24.04 or later. Simulation and 2D rendering run on the CPU; schematic and 3D rendering need an NVIDIA GPU with Vulkan and at least 8 GiB. Windows and macOS are not supported.

Without a large GPU, add --cloud to render the same scenario on SimForge's GPUs with SimForge Cloud.

Install the CLI
What is the difference between Studio and the CLI?

The CLI runs everything on your own machine. Studio is where scenarios are built, rendered and evaluated in the browser, free to explore with an account. Its renders and evaluations run on SimForge Cloud, and adding --cloud to a command runs the same job on SimForge's machines.

Docs
How does SimForge relate to NVIDIA's AlpaSim and Cosmos?

They are complementary. Cosmos is NVIDIA's family of world models and AlpaSim is NVIDIA's open-source closed-loop simulator. SimForge supplies real places as maps and digital twins, a deterministic simulator and sensor rendering.

SimForge is not affiliated with NVIDIA.

The open release

What is in the open release?

A scenario dataset, seven SimForge Worlds, SimForge Gym for RL training, and the simulator and Helios as a local binary for Linux, all available now. SimForge Cloud, which the same CLI reaches with --cloud, is open in beta.

The announcement
What is in the scenario dataset?

24,483 driving scenarios on 7 SimForge Worlds. Positions only: scenario files with OpenSCENARIO .xosc and parquet ground truth, in train, validation and test splits.

SIMLOG-25k
Which maps can I download?

Seven real places, each a SimForge World: Belmont Research Center, Richmond Field Station, Easterbrook Discovery School, El Camino Road, Yale Street, Di Rosa and San Ramon phase 1. Each comes as OpenDRIVE and SUMO road networks with a 3D pack for Helios, free with sign-in: simforge maps pull.

Licensing

Is SimForge open source?

The toolkit is: the CLI and SimForge Gym (the simforge-rl client) are Apache-2.0. The runtime that contains the simulator and Helios Engine is a closed binary, free for non-commercial use under PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0. The dataset is CC BY-NC 4.0, and the maps are for non-commercial use under the SimForge account and download terms.

The announcement
Can I use SimForge commercially?

Yes, with a commercial licence, which covers the runtime, the maps and the dataset. Research, study, teaching and evaluating SimForge are non-commercial. SimForge Cloud is open in beta. New accounts start with $10 in free credits; credit purchases aren't open during the beta.
